THE WITCH AND THE TSAR

Why we chose our GSFF January book - The Witch and the Tsar

The infamous witch in the woods, Baba Yaga, of Slavic folklore, is reimagined in THE WITCH AND THE TSAR as a demi-goddess – the daughter of the Mother Goddess Mokosh and a human man. Summoned to the court of Ivan IV of Russia to care for his ailing wife Anastasia Romanovna, she finds that more than ever her loyalties to humans and her family amongst the pagan gods conflicted, even as they both turn on her.

This book was chosen for January GSFF because we loved how the real history of the court of Ivan the Terrible was woven beautifully together with the old folklore of Russia. Baba Yaga becomes a more sympathetic character at the centre of the tale rather than the old wise woman who was to be feared not knowing if she was to be an ally or an enemy.
